Berne Pike Block (III)
One step backwards and two steps forwards.
After some self-cogitation, I've taken onboard feedback from folk on last posting of the Swiss front rank bases (thanks Stuart!). I've also been looking at other's ancient and renaissance pike blocks and borrowed an idea from Curt of Analogue Hobbies for some interesting bases he'd had done at Warbases (thanks Curt!).
The result is another row of levelled pikemen added to the front rank bases. The aim is to create a more tightly packed group on each base, attacking shoulder-to-shoulder. Again these figures are a mix of Perry and my own castings; including a few Perry plastic bodies with my own open-handed metal arms attached, which seem to work quite nicely and create some new poses.
Now moving on to the supporting row, who'll have pikes held at a 45 degree angle, before I commit to any gluing and basing.
Looking great so far. I play against Curts pike blocks and can confirm that the end result is stunning. Love the arms too.

Magnificent and admirable work! not only this, but all the presentations. There is nothing similar in the blogs of wargame. Cordial greetings and congratulations from the distant Argentine Republic
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Most impressive unit, a fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteThese custom castings? 10/10 would buy. As much as I love my Perry pikemen I wish the pikes weren't all vertical.
ReplyDeleteExcellent job, these look how I imagine they must have, shoulder to shoulder- it's a pig to base but well worth it. It makes it abundantly apparent how terrifying artillery fire must have been for them - and why they moved so quickly!
ReplyDeleteInteresting idea for basing.
ReplyDeleteI was just wondering, do you think the front rankers in full harness might work for Spanish heavy infantry? I am thinking the only thing that might be off would be the style of helmet.
the shapes of the helmets of these miniatures are right, its more, the swiss and another european used that kind of helmets much before than spanish I guess, you can check further information in legit chronicles of burgunderkriege chronicles like this one

Thanks for the link. I will have to do some more research then.
DeleteThe Pastrana Tapestries are a good visual source for Spanish. From memory they show a lot of kettlehats, many painted or cloth covered, and many protected by brigandines.
DeleteNow to find a good source to tons of Kettlehats. :D
DeleteThey do look the biz!
ReplyDeleteBy any chance, do you still consider to sell some of your castings? :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments. I will aim to sort out offering castings for sale soon, and will post information here.
